For business

Cold storage and refrigeration

Refrigeration compressors work hardest when it is hottest — and it is hottest when the sun is strongest.

Excellent matchTypical size: 20–150 kWp

What your load looks like

Load rises with outside temperature, so the demand peak lands on the same summer afternoons as the production peak. There is night load, but it is much lower.

What that means for the system

High self-consumption and, on commercial tariffs, a lower billed peak. Where an outage means spoiled stock, a battery is justified as backup — not as a saving.

Sizing

Start from the installed rating of the refrigeration plant and its duty cycle. Cold-store roofs are usually large and flat, so the roof rarely limits the system.

Why business is different

  • Commercial tariffs often bill peak demand — solar cuts that too, not just consumption.
  • Daytime load means high self-consumption, and self-consumption is the only part credited at the full price.
  • Industrial roofs are large, flat and unshaded, so the cost per kW is lower than on a house.
  • The investment is capitalised and depreciated, which changes the real after-tax cost.
